Suzanne’s Signatures

When I was asked by Lee Jofa to create one of their fabric collections, my first—and favorite—ideas were the two fabrics I have used in the guest room of our Los Angeles house.

On the first visit to the LJ studio, I said I really wanted to design a silk that could be coated with a chintz glaze so that it had a beautiful sheen, yet was not shiny. I knew it would be something that designers would go to again and again. Our Lee Jofa team produced a fabric, Glazed Silk, which was better than I had hoped, and that has a good deal of cotton so that it upholsters beautifully. In the Guest Room I have used it in
Taupe to upholster the bed and I have used it in other colors on painted Italian chairs in the living areas of our house.

Glazed Silk comes in fourteen beautiful colors and because of that and the perfect weight of it, has become a favorite fabric for us to use for curtains. In this room I chose the Linden color and trimmed the edges with scallop pinking, the way John Fowler did in the sixties and the way Colefax and Fowler did in the bedroom they designed for us 30 years ago. In the Leek color way, it is used for the bed’s comforter.

The other fabric I wanted to make was what became Garden Roses, which I used here in Lime/Leaf on the Louis XVI chair and ottoman. I have always loved using the classic Lee Jofa block printed linens on the wrong side, when the color bleeds through in different strengths and makes gauzy patterns, so Garden Roses was designed to look like that on the right side! I love the way that the painted chair frames the fabric.

Garden Roses comes in five beautiful color ways—there are soft, traditional pastels, more robust browns and pinky reds, greens and taupes and a beautiful all sepia color way.
